The Highland Ringers (Handbells) is a unique ensemble requiring a high level of commitment and dedication. Each member is responsible for 2-4 handbells performing in a choir of 56 handbells (5 Octaves).
Bells have been in existence for hundreds of years, but handbells developed in England in the 17th century. The first bells in England were huge and found in church towers. They were used for change ringing, the art of changing the order in which the bells ring. Eventually, English towns began practicing change ringing with small, wooden handbells so they wouldn't disturb neighbors and to avoid the uncomfortable environment in the bell tower. It was in 1660 that William and Robert Cor cast the first tuned bronze handbell in the Wiltshire Foundry in England. Small handbell sets were made to correspond to the bells in a specific tower.
The HVA handbells ensemble counts with a set of five octaves, which is the most common set in professional handbell choirs. The HVA "Ringers" regularly performs locally for our community and churches. The group is preparing to travel to Costa Rica during the last week of April 2023 to share their music at several SDA schools and churches in San Jose, Alajuela and Cartago.
